Moving beyond the personal rebuke, Paul unpacks what Martin Luther called the article on which the Christian faith stands or falls: the doctrine of Justification by Faith Alone.
Human nature naturally defaults back to legalism, performance, and compromise. But as Paul forcefully demonstrates, trying to add our good deeds to Christ's finished work doesn't complete the Gospel—it destroys it.
Main Idea: Jesus plus anything equals nothing... but Jesus plus nothing equals everything.
Through this text, we explore three life-changing theological truths:
1) Justification is by Faith, Not Works (vv. 15–16): Justification is a legal declaration by God that we are counted righteous—not because of our law-keeping, but through faith in Jesus Christ.
2) Justification is Final (vv. 17–18): Our standing before God is anchored in Christ’s unchanging character, not our daily performance. Returning to legalism isn't just a preference; it’s a betrayal of the Cross.
3) Justification Produces a New Life (vv. 19–21): We are free from the curse of the law! True salvation doesn't leave us unchanged; it crucifies the old self and resurrects a life driven by love for the Son of God.
